From the time that most women are little girls, they dream of the day when their someone special will drop to one knee, present a velvet box and ask for their hand in marriage. Few moments in life are more romanticized or pivotal than a proposal. Perhaps one of the most important elements of marriage proposals are engagement rings. A token of love, offered as a betrothal gift from a man to his prospective bride, engagement rings are represent a formal agreement to a future marriage.
Most modern day engagement rings feature a diamond, but there is no requirement that they do in order to be considered a proper engagement ring.
In modern, western culture, engagement rings are typically worn on the left hand ring finger. There are some historical accounts of this finger being believed to house the “vena amoris” or vein of love, which is likely where this practice began. Some eastern cultures wear an engagement ring on the right hand ring finger, but the left hand is much more common in modern society. The most common and typical engagement ring will consist of a simple gold or platinum band, which will have a solitaire setting which holds a diamond. The cut of these solitaires can range from round to pear to emerald cut to heart shaped, depending upon the tastes and desires of the betrothed couple.
Some less common styles of engagement rings may feature other gemstones, such as emeralds, sapphires and rubies. These other gemstones may be chosen to honor a family tradition or to incorporate stones that are salvaged from antique or vintage jewelry that has been in the family for generations.
There is a growing trend to use some of this older jewelry for engagement rings, as the handcrafted pieces are more unique and almost guaranteed to be a one of a kind. Modern engagement rings can also be part of a matched set that includes the bride’s wedding rings as well. When put together, the separate rings become one larger, more beautiful ring, much like the bride and groom join to become a beautiful union.
No matter what your taste in jewelry, there is no arguing that engagement rings are among the most prized pieces of jewelry in the world. A simple of pure and unending love, they are the happily ever after of the jewelry world. There is nothing that could be more beautiful than having the man you love drop to one knee and ask you to be his wife, while offering a beautiful engagement ring.
